Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879. She was born in a Bengali family in Hyderabad. Also, she passed her matriculation examination from the University of Madras. Naidu joined the Indian national movement in the wake of partition of Bengal in 1905. While she was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal by the British government for her work during the plague epidemic in India. In addition, in 1931, she participated in the round-table conference with Gandhi and Madan Mohan Malaviya. Furthermore, she played a leading role in the Civil Disobedience Movement and was jailed along with Gandhi and other leaders. Yet In 1942, she was arrested during the period of the “Quit India”.
First of all, she holds the record as the first woman to become the governor of an Indian state. Consequently, she was the second to become the president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and the first woman in India to do so. Despite her political career, she is known for her poetry. In 1905, her poem The Golden Threshold was published. As a result, she is also known as The Nightingale of the India. The Sceptred Flute: Songs of India was published in 1937. Finally, Sarojini Naidu died of a heart attack while working in her office in Lucknow on 2 March 1949.
